What is the oldest film ever? When filmmakers came on the idea of adding sound to films? And who invented the very first sequel? Scientias .nl takes you back in time. Past black and white movies to digital blockbusters as Avatar and Inception: movies are not in our lives. And that is perhaps a good thing too! The emergence of photography, the invention of projection and the introduction of celluloid reels (1889) all contributed to the development of the first film. Photography is what started it all. The oldest surviving picture is showed above. The photo dates from 1826 and was made by Nicéphore Niépce. There are a few visible rooftops of houses in the French village of Saint-Loup-de-Varennes. The high exposure time of eight hours ensured that photography was still not suitable for the production of films. Between 1826 and 1875 decreased the average exposure time of pictures drastically from a few hours to a fraction of a second. Roundhay Garden Scene is a short film from 1888. It is the oldest preserved film. The film lasts less than two seconds and includes 20 frames. In the film are four people to see: Adolphe Le Prince, Sarah Whitley, Joseph Whitley and Harriet Hartley. They run and dance through the garden of Joseph and Sarah Whitley in Roundhay (United Kingdom). Ten days after the shooting of this movie dies actress Sarah Robinson Whitley, the mother-in-law of Adolphe. She was 72 years old. In 1890 is Louis Le Prince, the Director of this movie, by train to London to his invention to patent. Bizarrely, he disappears between Dijon and Paris. It is unclear what has happened with the Director. Adolphe Le Prince was in 1902 in New York shot when he witnesses a declaration regarding the disappearance of his father. Who has interesting conspiracy theories?
